The Mobile User Objective System (MUOS) is an Ultra High Frequency (UHF) SATCOM System from 300MHz to 3GHz frequency range developed by the US Navy’s Communication Satellite Program Office in San Diego, for replacement of the UHF Follow-On (UFO) system. The MUOS program was developed to support the warfighter with new capabilities and enhanced mobility, access, capacity, and quality of service for airborne and maritime platforms, ground vehicles and dismounted soldiers with voice, data and video communications.

The MUOS program supports commercial third generation (3G) Wideband Code Division Multiple Access (WCDMA) usage via its geosynchronous satellites. Operating in the UHF frequency band; a lower band than used by conventional cellular phones, the MUOS program supports a greater variety of applications particularly for challenged environments.

The MUOS system will consist of four operational satellites and one orbit spare. For DoD communications MUOS will provide point-to-point and netted users with access to voice, data, and video around the globe. In addition to a WCDMA payload, MUOS supports the UFO legacy payload which extends the useful life of legacy UHF SATCOM terminals while providing a smoother transition to MUOS. The JTRS program was the program of record for delivery of the WCDMA waveform for MUOS. The first MUOS satellite, MUOS-1, launched into space successfully on February 24,  2012 with full operational capability in 2015.

MUOS-2, the second MUOS satellite, was launched on July 19, 2013. See the launch of MUOS-2!
